ICSI (Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

ICSI or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection is an assisted reproductive technology procedure that involves direct injection of a viable motile sperm into the cytoplasm of a healthy and mature egg to aid fertilization. The fertilized egg is then transferred into the uterine cavity at the blastocyst stage for implantation and development. Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection is used to treat severe infertility issues. Rathimed Fertility Centre offers the best infertility treatment options to help couples who are unable to conceive naturally through an

Who are eligible for an ICSI treatment procedure?

ICSI is an established mode of treatment for patients who have following conditions:

  • Recurrent fertilization failure after IVF
  • Surgically retrieved sperm for those with ejaculation issues
  • High antisperm antibodies levels
  • High sperm DNA fragmentation index
  • Poor sperm morphology
  • Immotile sperm
  • IVM oocytes

ICSI is also suggested in situations when the female partner has following conditions:

  • Diminished ovarian reserve

  • Unproductive results from standard insemination

ICSI Treatment Procedure

Rathimed Fertility Centre enfolds a team of skilled and experienced fertility specialists to perform all assisted reproductive technology procedures. Rathimed clinicians work to set a clear goal for developing patient oriented individualized treatment strategies and strive to work towards reducing time to conception and pregnancy.

During the IVF treatment phase, the female partner is administered with ovary stimulation medication to stimulate the ovary to produce multiple mature eggs during the ovulation process of the menstrual cycle. The mature eggs are retrieved by a minor surgical procedure and placed in a sterile medium.

Next, semen sample is collected from the male partner, washed and centrifuged to remove all other components from the sample to obtain a concentrated solution of motile sperm. For those whose have ejaculation issues, the sperms are retrieved using surgical procedures such as TESA, PESA or TESE. The tests for sperms integrity involve techniques that allows to assess their genetic makeup including DNA fragmentation indices.

When both the egg and sperm are available, the healthiest motile sperm is chosen and injected into the cytoplasm of the egg to fuse and fertilize to an embryo. The embryo is then transferred and implanted into the uterine cavity to complete the IVF treatment phase.

There are two techniques followed for insemination of sperms, standard insemination and ICSI insemination. During a standard insemination procedure, the eggs are retrieved and maintained in a sterile medium and combined with sperm in the same culture dish. In this method, the quality and maturity of egg is not evaluated. The ICSI technique, demands the assessment of the egg in order to increase the chances of fertilization. Only the healthiest and mature egg is used for the direct injection of sperm into the cytoplasm of a mature egg to fertilize. This ensures the success of the procedure as the fertilization rates are significantly higher with ICSI when compared to IVF.
