Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination or artificial insemination is a treatment procedure followed to increase the chances for fertilization. In this procedure, the sperms are obtained from the male partner and injected directly into the female uterine cavity for sperm-egg fusion. In the natural process, only a few fractions of sperms manage to pass through the cervical tube and reach the uterus. With artificial insemination procedure, a concentrated sperm solution is directly injected into the uterine cavity thereby increasing the probability for sperms to reach the egg for fertilization. Rathimed Fertility Centre offers IUI treatment procedure coupled with fertility drugs for a successful treatment course.

Who are the candidates for an IUI treatment?

Couples who are not able to conceive with the natural intercourse session with unspecified infertility who have been trying to have a baby for six to 12 months are recommended to undergo an artificial insemination procedure to boost the number of sperm available in the fallopian tubes for fertilization. You should have a thorough infertility evaluation before trying IUI. Couples who are diagnosed with cervical mucus abnormalities, low sperm count and sperm motility, increased sperm viscosity or due to an unexplained infertility are recommended to undergo IUI treatment.

There are certain criteria that have to be summit up to have a successful IUI procedure. The success of an IUI procedure depends on the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg in the fallopian tubes. This makes it obligatory to undergo a sperm test before the IUI procedure to check on the following parameters:

  • Sperm count
  • Sperm motility rate
  • Sperm size and shape

Similarly, the female partner should also have a cyclic ovulation process and release a healthy and mature egg and reach the fallopian tube when the sperms are injected into the uterus. Women who have menstrual issues or other medical conditions that can interfere with the fertilization process have to have them rectified before undergoing the artificial insemination process.

Intrauterine Insemination Procedure

Intrauterine Insemination procedure is conducted on a date close to the ovulation day so that the sperms are available and ready for fertilization when a mature egg is released. The ovulation time is controlled through medication to release a fully matured egg. The insemination process is performed by opening and holding the vagina using a speculum to view the cervix. The washed concentrated sperm solution is injected into the uterine cavity next to the tubal openings using a sterile catheter.

The patient may experience mild cramping after the procedure. Medications are provided to ease the discomfort and to reduce the risk of infection. Spotting or light bleeding may occur after the insemination, which is normal.

If the procedure does not produce a fruitful result, Rathimed Fertility Centre offers IUI treatment clubbed with fertility drugs that help ovulate more number of eggs during the ovulation cycle thus increasing the likelihood of fertilization.

The success rates of the IUI treatment depends upon many factors such as maternal age, egg quality, uterine conditions, sperm count, mobility and morphology. For couples who are still not able to conceive, Rathimed Fertility Centre offers more advanced fertility treatment approaches for conceiving.
